Numbers 19-20, Psalm 72, John 14
Something that I must look into . . . I know or knew that Moses was not allowed into the promised land because of something he had done at a rock to bring forth water . . . but I am not seeing it now. Is it his attitude in how he dealt with the people? Is it the fact that he did not give Glory to God for the gift of the water or was it that he struck the rock twice?
This is a beautiful Psalm coming from a father to his son who is about to succeed him as King of the people of Israel. One thing that stands out to me is the ‘mowed grass’ and references to the moon. I know it’s odd, but it seems to make it a little more personal in thinking that David looked up and saw the same moon we see today . . . and that surely there was grass to be mowed . . . I mean I think most feel Israel is a dry desolate place, a dessert and no need for mowing grass. Just makes them all more human I guess, more real.
Speaking more to following the word based on love and not the other way around, the passage in John 14:23 states, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word . . . ” It is out of love that we should keep the word of God. It shouldn’t be done out of fear or out of a design or scheme to get God to love you, God loves us already. So much that He gave His only son as a perfect and eternal sacrifice for our sins. This was given before you were born and thus before you could start following the law, therefore how is it that people think the way to ‘earn’ God’s love is through works and following the law . . . His love is already given! So love the Lord, and the fruit of that love will be obedience to the Lord and His word.
