The building and the dweller

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭ESV‬‬

This verse calls me to remember two things.

First, God’s Spirit dwells within me. This means that wherever I go and whatever I face, God is there with me through it all. The church is not a building but a people, a gathering of Gods people together. Satan and the world could tear down every church building on the planet and still the Church would remain. Something my pastors said when we started meeting online due to the pandemic stuck with me. “We’re not canceling church we’re simply canceling the large public gathering and instead meeting online.” God’s Spirit dwells within us so we are never alone.

Second, I am Gods temple as is every other believer. This reinforces the thought process of loving and respecting others as fellow image bearers of Christ. It also means that I should be mindful of what I allow into my temple. Not so much in food or drink but more so what I consume with my eyes and ears. What I consume this way comes out in my words and deeds and that has the danger of defiling the temple. Also, a temple is a building … not God Himself. Meaning, I am not God or a little god or will one day become a god. My body is a temple where Gods Spirit resides and that’s it. Mind you, that’s awesome!
